What are Cordsets and What are They Used For?
A cordset is used to connect an electrical appliance or piece of equipment to a power source, acting as a flexible extension for a power supply. These versatile cordsets can be used for a wide variety of applications, including powering household appliances, connecting industrial machinery, creating automation in car wash systems, linking sensors and controllers in automated systems, and providing power for medical equipment.Â
Durable cordsets are crucial in car washes for powering sensors, motors, and other equipment, with benefits including reliable power delivery and protection from harsh environments like water, soap, and dirt. Cable carriers and cordsets manage the power and control cables for the machinery that moves vehicles through the wash, such as the conveyor belts. They provide power to various sensors that detect vehicle presence, water levels, and equipment status, as well as to the motors that drive brushes or spray nozzles. Cordsets also power payment systems, RFID readers, and other components that control access and process payments for car wash services. Another application is to connect wiring for in-tunnel lighting, emergency stop buttons, and other safety features throughout the facility.Â
Turck cordsets are used in a variety of other industrial applications as well, including robotics, material handling, and factory automation for both power and data transmission.
Automation Cables
Automation cables are engineered to transmit power, signals, and data in automated industrial environments. They are built to withstand harsh conditions like high temperatures, mechanical stress, wash downs and electrical interference, ensuring reliable performance in systems like robotics, PLCs, sensors in car washes and other conveyors, and control devices. Key applications include power distribution, data communications, and connecting control equipment for efficient, high-speed operation. Complete cordsets are constructed with various connectors, such as M8, M12, and mini/micro connectors, and are often available as pre-made for convenience.
These cables are built to resist dust, liquids, lubricants, and mechanical stress, making them suitable for harsh industrial settings. They are sometimes made shielded to reduce electrical interference, ensuring clear signal transmission in noisy environments. Many are designed for flexibility to handle movement in machinery and robotics. They carry both the power to run machinery and the data signals that control automated processes. Specialized cables include those for Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), servo motors, sensor/actuator connections, and Fieldbus systems like DeviceNet.
Common Cordset Series and Applications
- Minifast: A common series for connecting sensors and actuators, providing a plug-and-play solution that requires no soldering, crimping, or overmolding in the field. These cables are CSA Division 2 approved, available with PVC or TPU jackets and have a wide temp tolerance.
- M12 Eurofast: A popular, versatile connector standard for various industrial applications. These cordsets are available in different jacket materials like PVC, TPU, and TPE with straight and right-angle plugs, with or without shielding. Conductor sizes include 18AWG and 22AWG.
- Industrial Ethernet (4422 series): These are robust and flexible cables designed for high-speed data communication in industrial settings to supports protocols like PROFINET, EtherCAT, and EtherNet/IP. They are available with stranded or solid-core conductors and are PoE/PoE+ compliant.
- Harsh Environment cordsets are overmolded, with rugged construction designed to withstand difficult conditions like vibration, washdown, and exposure to chemicals. They offer Mil-Spec options for extreme durability.and various housing materials like die-cast aluminum and polyurethane for chemical resistance.
- Welding Spark Resistant models with aramid jackets are specifically engineered for welding applications to prevent damage from sparks.Look for specific series like TXO3701 and TXY3713.
- CAN Bus Y-cables are used for quickly wiring CAN devices like valves on sprayers. They are resistant to aggressive spray media and feature secure connections with Superseal connectors for high vibration environments. Constructed with e-cast aluminum and polyurethane for chemical resistance.
Connector Types
The three main types of cable connectors in automation are circular connectors, rectangular connectors, and coaxial connectors. These categories are based on the physical shape of the connector, with circular connectors being common for compact applications like sensors, rectangular for more heavy-duty connections, and coaxial for specific signal transmission needs. The most common cordset connectors in car washes are M12 circular connectors and Sealcon cable glands/cord grips, known for their IP66/IP67/IP68/IP69K sealing and resistance to water, chemicals, and vibration. These connectors are robust and designed to prevent moisture ingress in harsh, high-pressure washdown environments.Â
Minifast Cordset Features
Turck Minifast cordsets feature durable, over molded construction with PVC jackets, available in various configurations like 3, 4, and 5 conductors. Key specifications include electrical ratings (e.g., up to 600 V, 25 A depending on the specific model), environmental sealing (NEMA 6P/IP67/IP68/IP69K), and temperature ranges from -40 F to 194 F. They are designed for plug-and-play connectivity to transmit signals in demanding industrial environments. Turck Minifast cordset electrical ratings vary by model, but common ratings include 9 A and 600 V for many standard models with 18 AWG and 16 AWG wire, respectively. Some high-power or specific models can handle up to 25 A at 600 V. Always verify the specific model number for the correct voltage and current ratings.Â
Notable features include:
Connectors are designed with keyways that ensure proper orientation. Connectors are designed to be connected by hand and meet the rated ingress protection for the product. It is not recommended to use a wrench or other tools with the products for tightening unless adjusting torque setting.
